Muslin Drawstring Bags
For Coffee or Loose Leaf Tea. Fill your drawstring bag with loose tea, and place in mug. Pour boiling water and let steep three to five minutes, lift bag out and Enjoy your fresh brewed tea!
These food grade, unbleached drawstring bags allow you to flavor your foods with spices without having to strain them out before serving, While many of the herb blends for soups and stews are finely cut and blend in easily with other ingredients, some blends are a little coarser and there are those who prefer not to have them in their final dish although they still want the flavor. Another example would be mulled wine spice - the spices add a wonderful flavor to mulled wine or hot apple cider, but you certainly don't want to drink them.
These drawstring bags have many other uses. They are great to use in place of cheesecloth tied in a bundle for your spices, They can be easily washed and reused. I use mine when I make stews, I place whole peppercorns and bay leaves in the bag, when I'm done simmering my stew, I just remove the bag and no one has to remove the bay leaves from their plate!
Tea Tidbits:
The difference between green and black tea is in the fermentation. Which is from none in the case of green tea, to complete in the case of black tea. It's also a question of whether heat is applied to the leaves. It's one thing to steam it and dry it in the green form; essentially with green tea you're preserving fresh tea. When you let the natural fermentation of a leaf continue but only briefly, you have oolong. When you let it continue all the way, and then finish drying over high heat (called firing) you have black tea. Gun powder refers to the rolling of the leaves into tight little pellets.
How to Brew a Perfect Pot of Tea:
Start with a clean, warm teapot. Measure one teaspoon of tea for every six ounces of water. Bring a kettle of fresh cold water to a rolling boil. Immediately pour the boiling water over the tea leaves. Cover and steep for three to five minutes. Stir and pour through a strainer into cups or a thermos. Other options are to use a tea ball or tea infuser spoon. Still another option is to use already made tea bags, my favorite, just heat a cup of water in the microwave and steep a single tea bag!
