Turmeric

Turmeric is a member of the ginger family and an underground root of the plant grown in all tropical areas of the world. Turmeric has been around for over 2,000 years in China, India and the Middle East.  Turmeric adds a warm, mild aroma and a distinctive golden yellow color to foods.  It is often used as a substitute for saffron because of it's color.  It is used to make deviled eggs, rice and bean dishes, cauliflower and potato dishes, and poultry and fish dishes.  In India, it has long been used as a remedy for liver ailments and a dye for cloth.

Turmeric has a light musky flavor, along with a brilliant golden-orange color that makes it essential to curry powder. Turmeric is a coloring agent in cheese, soups, sauces, butter and margarine, syrups and vegetable casseroles.  If you make your own mustard, pickles, relish, jams or curry powder, you should invest in a little turmeric, you don't have to add much for a improvement in appearance of these homemade products.
